Book review: Allergy-Free Cooking Recipe Book

ALLERGY-FREE COOKING RECIPE BOOK

Dr Sue Shepherd

Penguin (RRP $35)

COOKING can be a challenge at the best of times, but if you’re limited in the foods your body can stomach then it’s easy to stick with a limited, foolproof repertoire.

Thankfully, dietitian Sue Shepherd has experimented widely and can inspire those with even the most difficult collection of food intolerance issues. Her latest title not only provides a comprehensive list of substitutes for common ingredients, it includes a varied selection of recipes that cater for people who are sensitive to gluten, wheat, dairy, nuts, seeds, seafood, soy and egg. We road-tested the polenta slice with pumpkin, spinach and sage.

The recipe was easy to follow and impressed this reviewer, a food intolerant taster, and my dining companion, who doesn’t suffer from food allergies but happily tucked in anyway. Cutting out myriad ingredient options didn’t cut out the taste. I’ll be using this book again.
