Whittlesea North the hottest of house building ‘hotspots’

THE Housing Industry Association has named Whittlesea North its number one building hotspot for the third year running.

Whittlesea council’s planning and major projects director Steve O’Brien said Whittlesea North’s population grew by 17.4 per cent in 2010-11, ahead of Wyndham South’s 14 per cent.

In the 12 months to December, Whittlesea North led all other metropolitan areas in the number of permits issued, according to figures released by the Building Commission of Victoria earlier this year.

Residential building work approved in 2010-11 for the area was valued at $717.2 million.

“These figures demonstrate the effectiveness of council’s long-term approach to strategic planning and a very significant commitment towards creating sustainable communities,” Mr O’Brien said.

An HIA “hotspot” is an area where population growth exceeds the national rate of

1.4 per cent a year and where the value of residential building work approved is more than $100 million.
