THE end of the world and a combination of crazy ideas are behind Sampology’s latest audio-visual DJ show, Super Visual Apocalypse.

Instead of being all doom and gloom, however, Sam Poggioli (aka Sampology) takes the mickey out of this year’s apparent impending Mayan apocalypse.

For those not familiar with the concept of AVDJing, Poggioli says it’s taking what a normal DJ does and including a visual element. It’s the “ability to be creative” with people’s senses – sight and sound. Think big screens, lights and music.

“I’m trying to tell a story with the different transitions through a set,” Poggioli says.

His latest show coincides with the release of his debut album Doomsday Deluxe, which follows the show’s theme. The show itself stars Bruce Willis saving the world. Poggioli couldn’t think of anyone better.

“It was a pretty easy choice because who else can you think of who has saved the world so many times?” Poggioli doesn’t have anything against Willis, but after watching him repeatedly he believes Willis actually plays on the stereotypical ‘‘save the world’’ image.

After feeding himself “a steady diet” of one Bruce Willis film a day while developing Super Visual Apocalypse, Poggioli says he’s acquired a “weird infatuation” with him. He says it’s “part bromance and part stalker”.

Another smaller element of the show is cats. Poggioli is quick to say he isn’t “a crazy cat person” but his use of cats is just another example of his crazy ideas.

“The crazier the idea or the stupider, the better for me,” Poggioli says.

It all helps to make the show a little more ridiculous. With Willis as the main character, he wanted something relevant to this year. And after seeing all the cat videos “taking over the internet, why not the whole world?”.

Poggioli says the show is about breaking down the fear of the apocalypse. “It’s about creating a vibe where people are partying like it is the end of the world.”
