Lack of Epping station parking sparks snarls

PUBLIC transport is causing parking headaches for residents in streets surrounding Epping rail station.

But Whittlesea council decided last week to wait three months and review commuter parking patterns before considering the residents’ calls for parking restrictions.

Commuters using the new station, which opened last November, are choking small streets with their cars blocking driveways and damaging nature strips, according to Epping residents’ campaigner Karen Trigg.

She said a shortage of parking at the station had overloaded nearby streets such as Sunbird Garden and Campbell and Coulstock streets.

“Our streets are narrow and they are parking on both sides, making it impossible to back out,” Ms Trigg said.

“It’s disastrous and it will only get worse as the population grows.”

A report to the council stated after South Morang station opened in April, parking problems eased in Epping but now commuters were “drifting back” to Epping streets. Although there was parking at Thomastown and Lalor stations, commuters were not using them, it stated.
