Lalor grandma gears up for cancer fight

CANCER survivors and their families in the City of Whittlesea will join thousands of cyclists in the Ride to Conquer Cancer fund-raiser later this year.

Lalor grandmother Nicola Donaldson, a Peter MacCallum patient recovering from her second bout of the disease, learned to cycle to join the event.

The 54-year-old said she wanted to show her appreciation of the Peter MacCallum centre and her treatment, which included surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

As part of her training, she has ridden 2600 kilometres, lost 26 kilograms and raised $2500 towards her personal goal of $3500.

The event is the first in Victoria after 1300 cyclists rode in Brisbane last year to raise $4.7 million.

Organisers have yet to announce the route for the 200-kilometre trip over October 27 and 28. Riders will support research and new cancer therapies at Peter MacCallum.

Cancer is the second highest cause of death in Australia.
