Litter costs Whittlesea $2.5m

WHITTLESEA ratepayers are being hit by a $2.5 million bill to collect  roadside litter.

Council workers such as Pat Pavia and Merv Anderson have to pick up wrappers, cigarette butts, packets and other litter.

Council infrastructure manager Peter Ali said it cost a fortune to clean rubbish on roads and in public spaces. ‘‘This does not take into account the environmental, social or economic costs of degraded environments, and potential to injure wildlife and aquatic creatures,’’ he said.

‘‘If people stopped littering, council could put the money saved into improving infrastructure or enhancing community services. Reduced litter would also result in a healthier and more enjoyable environment to live, work and do business in.’’

He urged people to dob in litterbugs to the council.
