With the school holidays approaching, those with a need for speed can plan a trip to the Westfield Plenty Valley shopping centre. The centre will provide free simulated racing cars in its ‘‘top gear racing zone’’, the centre court outside Aldi supermarket. Potential rev-heads can pit their skills against other ‘‘drivers’’ between 11am and 1pm. September 24-28.

Bonsai warriors

Making something small out of something big is the aim of the Northern Suburbs Bonsai Club. The club will demonstrate how to style a tree for bonsai from scratch at 7.15pm at the Lalor Library, May Road, Lalor. September 13

Dance for fitness

The new age exercise craze Nia (pronounced nee-a) is hitting the dance floor at the Bundoora Community Centre in Noorong Avenue, Bundoora. A blend of dance moves, martial arts and healing methods for all ages and fitness levels, it will run on Wednesday afternoons during term four, complementing the centre’s other classes in yoga, tai chi, Pilates, zumba and aerobics. Stunning photos

Works by the late Sue Ford, one of Australia’s most important photographers, are on show at the Bundoora Homestead Arts Centre. Ford was working on photographic self-portraits before her death in 2009, and the 47 images form the Time Machine exhibition.
