THIRST

L.A. Larkin

Pier 9

Known as one of the few female thriller authors in Australia, British-born L.A. Larkin has set her second novel, Thirst, in the harsh climate of Antarctica.

Well researched, thanks to Larkin’s previous career as a climate-change consultant and a trip to the Antarctica on a former Russian oceanographic research vessel, this book is a page turner.

Thirst is set a few years from now in a world that suffers from drought. Maverick Australian glaciologist Luke Searle and his Antarctic station team find themselves in the middle of a ruthless plan to harvest water, no matter the cost to human lives or the environment.

It’s basically a story of polar survival as Luke is forced to fight to stay alive and stop a climatic catastrophe. While the end wraps up a little too neatly, this is a fast-paced novel with well-defined characters and exciting plot lines that make it hard to put down. It’s an exciting read with a clear environmental message, but Larkin is careful not to hit you over the head with it.
