Whittlesea gardeners’ water wisdom grows

Taking a conservative approach, Denis Llelliott and wife Julie (pictured) turned off their garden taps in May to become committed water misers.

“Water is cheap but it is precious,” Mr Llelliott said. Yarra Valley Water managing director Tony Kelly said now was the time to prepare gardens for the warmer months.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting this summer to be the hottest and driest in three years,” he said.

Latest figures show that water usage in households in every suburb of the City of Whittlesea, with the exception of Thomastown, had increased water consumption in the past financial year compared to 2010-11.

The biggest water-guzzlers were in Mill Park where households used an average 504 litres per day, compared to 487 litres in the previous financial year, he said.
