Turkish delight for Whittlesea’s Monday market

Dressed in traditional Turkish garb, Fehmi Mehdi Altinsoy stands out in the crowd at Whittlesea’s Monday market.

The fruit and vegetable seller is one of about 130 stallholders at the Whittlesea Showgrounds who have voted to open the market on the day before Christmas.

Market organiser Graeme Hunter said he gave them the option of taking the day off, but people wanted to sell last-minute gifts.

The market used to be known as the Mernda Market until building works forced it to move to the showgrounds, where it has grown.

“We have a bit of everything, from plants galore, fruit and vegetables, clothes and we have some stallholders who call themselves the Myer Emporium because of all the things they have,” Mr Hunter said.

The market is open from 8am to 1pm.
