A SPRINT from the car to collect your child from care could cost you your valuables, police have warned.
Thieves are targeting cars parked near child care centres in Whittlesea and Darebin municipalities, and police are investigating “a number” of incidents, Whittlesea Crime Prevention officer Sandy O’Connor said. She warned parents to lock their vehicles when entering child care centres to pick up their children.
“It takes less than a minute for a thief to get into your car and steal your valuables so don’t make it easy for them.”
Ms O’Connor said thieves caused hundreds of dollars damage breaking into cars for loose change or sunglasses, let alone visible items such as mobile phones, laptop computers, bags and sporting equipment.
She advised drivers to always lock cars, close windows and make sure keys are not left in the car when leaving it unattended. “If you have a driveway, use it. Don’t leave your vehicle in the street if you don’t have to,” she said.
