Asta, a guide dog in training, has joined Parade College in Bundoora as a new “student”. The four-month-old female Labrador will learn the ropes from staff member, David Lovatt, who is also a volunteer dog trainer.
College spokeswoman Julie Dwyer says it is unusual to have a puppy in training at a secondary school but Asta is proving to be a star pupil and is “learning at a rapid rate”. Lovatt says he hopes the students will learn from the experience.
“Being part of a community means, at times, putting one’s self out for the better good of others. We hope that the boys will learn this and will then integrate it into their own approach to life too.”
