South Morang homicide investigation: Yelling, then woman found dead

“What have you done? What’s going on?” Then silence. That is what Attila Fogas, 50, heard shortly before a woman was found dead at her home in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

UPDATE: Man arrested over South Morang woman’s death

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of the 59-year-old woman whose body was found at a home in South Morang about 3pm on Tuesday.

A man who also lived at the house was flown to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries. He remains there under police guard.

Mr Fogas, who lives opposite the couple, described the man he called George as a “nice fella” who installed his air-conditioning at the home he built in the quiet South Morang St five years ago.

He said he was in his backyard when he heard screaming or shouting about 1.55pm on Tuesday.

“It was a man’s voice. It was one man or two. I can’t be sure,” Mr Fogas said.

But about 30 minutes later Mr Fogas heard more yelling, then nothing.

About 2.50pm he heard sirens and went outside his home to find police and ambulance “everywhere”.

Mr Fogas, a former Australian welterweight champion who beat Lester Ellis in 1991, described George and his wife as a quiet couple.

He said he was going to visit George about noon because he heard he fell off a balcony in November.

An electrician friend had told him to check on George because of his injury.

“I was thinking about midday I should visit him. Maybe if I did this wouldn’t have happened.”

Police were called to the house  in Thrush Street around 2.50pm and found the woman dead and the man with injuries.

A police spokeswoman said he was under a police guard and his injuries were non life-threatening.

Police had closed off the street on Tuesday evening as forensics and homicide detectives examined the scene.

People with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au

The incident came just hours after a woman was found dead in a bungalow following a police siege in Sunshine West.

A man had a street fight with three neighbours and allegedly tried to attack police before he was arrested in relation to the death of his mother Athiel Manel, police said.

The 23-year-old, believed to be armed with a tomahawk, was found outside the house and uniform police called Critical Incident Response Team officers.
