DOREEN Primary School has a “path to nowhere”, forcing parents to drive children to school rather than letting them walk, according to the principal Glenn Simondson.
He said a path built in the 1990s was overgrown and the waist-high grass was only cut twice a year. In summer there was a risk of snakes.
“Somewhere underneath the grass is a granitic sand path laid by the City of Whittlesea in the 1990s,” Mr Simondson said. “Then the municipal boundaries changed and we are under the Shire of Nillumbik. They allocated it [the path] two cuts a year.
“In the past five years the enrolment at Doreen Primary School has tripled to 150 while traffic has increased. Our school has no safe pedestrian access or safe bike path.”
A council spokeswoman said the path, which runs from the intersection of Yan Yean Road and Doctors Gully Road about 800 metres to the school, was on an upgrade list which would be considered in budget talks in the next few weeks.
