Whittlesea’s Relay for Life team runs for cancer victims’ lives

Debbie Cooke and her team of 30 walkers won’t get a wink of sleep on Saturday.

For the fourth year in a row, Debbie will captain a team of Relay for Life walkers, who will take turns lapping the Meadowglen athletics track between 4pm on Saturday, February 28, and 10am the next day to raise money for cancer research.

The Whittlesea City Athletics Centre team hopes to beat its effort of last year when it raised more than $6000.

Debbie has been involved with the athletics club for more than 15 years since her two children, now 21 and 18, began training there in their prep years.

The 54-year-old says a few club members have recently been diagnosed with cancer and her father is currently battling the disease, making the effort even more significant.

Each donation helps fund Cancer Council research, prevention and support services.
