Women’s groups get funding boost

Grants are available to existing or new women’s groups to help women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

The one-off $4000 grants can be used to start new women’s groups or to help existing ones.

The funding is an initiative of the Whittlesea CALD Communities Family Violence Project Steering Group and aims to reduce the isolation of women from different backgrounds at risk of domestic violence.

“Through these grants we want to invest in supporting groups to promote and advance the engagement of women from CALD backgrounds living in the City of Whittlesea.” spokesman Jemal Ahmet said.

“Research tells us that the empowerment women gain through group participation is vital to their confidence to seek support and receive information about their rights and the services available to support them.”

The grants aim to provide financial support for women’s groups to:

Expand the participation of women from CALD backgrounds in their activities.

Develop opportunities for groups to extend their knowledge and understanding of family violence, women’s legal rights and the services available to support them.

Develop trust and co-operation between CALD women, the broader community and the  service sector.

Increase the ability and confidence of individual women, groups and organisations to identify and address violence against women and children.

Applications close Monday, August 5. For more information, visit whittleseacommunityconnections.org.au.
