TAC Cup: Calder Cannons start with a bang

A blistering second half and some brilliant defensive work gaven Calder Cannons the perfect start to the 2014 TAC Cup season on Saturday.

Playing local rivals Western Jets, Calder made a statement in the opening term with 10 shots on goal to two.

But inaccuracy meant the Cannons led by only 23 points after a dominant term, and a tight tussle in the second meant the Jets cut the deficit by just two points.

Four third-quarter goals put the Cannons in the box seat, as the Jets struggled to make any sort of impact on the scoreboard.

The Cannons led by 43 points at the final change, and although the Jets kicked five of their eight goals in the last term it mattered little as Calder ran out 40-point round one victors.

Josh Cauchi and Lachlan Cavanagh both booted three for the victors, and Touk Miller was best on ground.

Calder will host the Northern Knights at Highgate Recreation Reserve at 3pm this Sunday.

Several suburban practice matches were also played on Saturday, with reigning Northern Football League premier Bundoora soundly beaten by Avondale Heights, while Westmeadows knocked off Epping. West Coburg also enjoyed a win over Yarraville Seddon.
