Five community groups have signed up to Whittlesea council’s sustainability outreach program in its first year, including a Mill Park playgroup that has been experimenting with composting worms.
The Mill Park children, aged three to five, have been learning about the environment and living sustainably.
But it’s the squirming, slimy worms that really get them excited.
Program co-ordinator Joanna Oostermeyer said the children sang songs, read books and discussed how to care for the worms. “Feeding them food scraps is a highlight,” she said.
The Mill Park playgroup, which holds sessions at Carrington Children’s Centre, Thomastown, has also chosen to focus its year-long Sustainability Outreach Whittlesea Program on growing vegetables, recycling and water conservation.
The program is designed to support community groups keen to improve their environmental and sustainability practices.
Any not-for-profit group in the Whittlesea municipality can apply to join the free program.
