Jacana’s win was “well overdue,” according to its coach after his team had trounced Burnside Heights by 73 points in Essendon District Football League division 2 on Saturday.
Both sides took time to adjust to wintery conditions in an even first quarter before Jacana showed its class in the second term with 14 scoring shots building a solid lead.
The Jaguars continued to control the game in the second half, winning 18.17 (125) to 7.10 (52).
Coach Matthew Sacco said he had faith that things would click after a couple of poor weeks.
“I had no doubt the boys would get the job done. We have a few injuries and there were heads on the chopping block, so they knew they needed to play well. We dominated in the midfield, with our two ruckmen allowing us to get the centre clearances and we used the corridor a lot more than we had been.”
Sacco said the scoreboard wasn’t a true indicator of his side’s dominance.
“In the second term, we didn’t stop running and should have kicked more goals [than 7.7]. In the final term we kicked 3.11, and should have won by 30 goals, but a win is a win.”
Josh Robertson, Ryan McCawley and Darcy Smith were best afield for the Jaguars.
Sacco said he expected to surprise a few sides in the next few weeks. “We have a couple of big names to come back. Chris Johnson has only played one match. They won’t know what has hit them.”
This week, Jacana faces the undefeated Roxburgh Park, which outclassed Coburg Districts by 33 points, 18.17 (125) to 14.8 (92).
“If we get out of the gates early we should be able to match it with Roxburgh,” Sacco said.
