Tinea is a common fungal condition often affecting athletes who spend hours in sweaty socks. It’s easily curable and largely goes unnoticed. But in a small community in the Solomon Islands, the most common type of tinea spreads across the entire body, pushing suffers to the edge of society.
Chiropractor Lawrence Staub is co-founder and co-director of South Pacific Allied Health, a not-for-profit charity that responds to the needs of Solomon Islanders.
This month he’s heading to the north coast of San Cristobal Island with a team of medical practitioners and engineers to roll out a program to help cure tinea suffers. “For $7
… they’re totally cured,” Mr Staub said.
A fund-raising event at Plenty Valley Adventist Church last month raised about $1700 for the organisation, some of which will go its tinea program and some to bringing clean drinking water to remote communities.
