On yer bikes

Young people are being invited to take part in a series of street-themed activities as part of Shaken Youth Week. From June 10-13, girls can learn about street art and how to repair bikes and scooters; the following week it’s the boys’ turn to get involved. At Broadmeadows shopping centre.

Landscape views

At a Hume Enviro Champions meet-up this Wednesday, local photographer Andrew Haysom will exhibit his spectacular collection of photographs taken at Woodlands Historic Park. Bring a plate and meet others interested in living sustainably.

Children ‘explained’

Early Life Foundation’s Kathy Walker will explain why children behave in the ways they do and provide practical parenting strategies. This session, in the Fountain View Room at Whittlesea council’s South Morang offices, is recommended for early-years educators and parents. It’s from 7-9pm tomorrow. Cost: $25.

Aboriginal identity

Dr Sue Atkinson will talk with Aboriginal parents about what they want for their children in the early-childhood curriculum. This session, recommended for early-years educators, will be facilitated by Annette Sax and consultants Yarn Strong Sista. It’s from 7pm on Thursday, July 24, at the council’s South Morang offices. Cost: $25.

Clean and green

Learn how to better clean your home with a Hume council green cleaning ‘guru’. This workshop is packed with great advice on how to clean, using cheap, healthy products found in most kitchen cupboards. It’s at Homestead Community and Learning Centre, 30 Wiltshire Drive, Roxburgh Park, from 1pm on Wednesday, June 18.

Social outlet

Hume and Northern Happenings is for people in their 40s and 50s who live in the northern suburbs. The group has fortnightly functions. An information session will be held on Friday.

Salt in Sunbury

Bernard Salt, widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading social commentators, will speak at the next Sunbury business dinner this Wednesday. Mr Salt uses data on demographic and social change to interpret how society and business
