Lions already winners

South Morang Women’s Football team is already a winner even before the team steps onto the field for its first ever final in the Victorian Women’s Football League next weekend.

A win in the final round against Fitzroy- ACU and  a surprise loss to Chirnside Park has seen the Lions finish on top of the ladder.

A finals berth is a long way from 12 months ago when they went win less in their inaugural season.

Lions coach Maurice Baldasso said the girls were excited to play finals.

“All you have to do is look at the side’s Facebook page so see how much they are looking forward to it,” Baldasso said.

“They are really pumped.

“Not many of them have played finals before.”

Baldasso said despite the inexperience of the side he was confident that the girls could handle the pressure.

“The way they have been training, I’m confident they can handle it.

“We will have a full team back to choose from for finals with Sharnni [Di Mauro] back from injury.

“We have to be level headed and take each game as it comes.”

He said having a hard game in the last round was a bonus ahead of finals.

“It keeps them on their toes.”

The Lions will play  Chirnside Park in the opening round of the finals.

“We want to play Chirnside Park. It will be a great achievement to be in the top two.

“We would rather not be playing Port Melbourne. They have a division 2 side and players from that division have been playing for them in division 4 the last few weeks. In saying that, we did have a close result against them when we played them.”

He said the backline was the key to the side’s success.

“It’s the best backline in the competition and it’ll determine how well we go.”
