Hume councillor Jack Medcraft raised one of his pet hates at the Hume council meeting on July 14 – cars crossing double white lines along the road from Melbourne Airport to Sunbury.
“I’m amazed no one has been killed there,” he said, pointing out that there was a properly constructed plane-spotting place just a couple of hundred yards around the corner towards Sunbury.
“There are signs there, but they’re not that big, especially if you’re driving at 100km/h.”
Cr Medcraft’s fears were realised last week when two people were killed in a three-car collision on Wednesday evening.
A 45-year-old Werribee man and a 43-year-old Preston man died at the scene, while a 30-year-old Craigieburn man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. A 43-year-old Sunbury man, whose car was the third vehicle implicated in the crash, was not injured.
Leading Senior Constable Lee Thomson said police believed the Craigieburn man lost control of his blue Holden while heading north-west away from the airport on the Sunbury Road. His car collided with two other cars about 5.15pm.
Cr Medcraft had used time set aside for other business to call on the council to write to VicRoads about this specific stretch of road. It’s not the first time this section of the double-lane road around the back of the airport has come under council scrutiny.
“I’d love to see a concrete barrier right down the middle,” Cr Medcraft told the meeting.
