Epping man charged over alleged 1987 abduction and rape gets bail

An Epping man charged with sexual assault offences dating back 27 years has been  granted bail by the Melbourne Magistrates Court until a committal hearing in October.

Andrew James Schwab, now 52, has been charged with offences including two counts of aggravated rape, rape, and abduction of a person by force, over incidents in Springvale in 1987.

He was arrested by Sexual Crimes Cold Case Unit detectives on Wednesday morning.

The charges follow an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman and a two-year-old boy, police say.

Mr Schwab has been charged with 16 offences, concerning two separate incidents and victims, one month apart, in Springvale, court documents reveal.

He has been accused of detaining, raping and assaulting a woman at a home on Springvale Road on Tuesday January 13, 1987.

Mr Schwabb was also charged with a sexual assault on a child at a unit on St Johns Avenue in Springvale on February 15, 1987.

Many of the charges were aggravated by alleged serious violence inflicted on both victims.
