A ‘mad scientist’ will be the star of an Epping Views Primary School students’ video presentation at a Melbourne Water ‘Kids Teaching Kids’ conference later this month.
The video, Forces Of Water, tells the story of a boffin who travels back in time, meeting a caveman who teaches him about water cycles. He then returns to the present day to teach others what he has learnt.
The Kids Teaching Kids two-day event gives years 5 to 10 students a chance to teach their peers about Melbourne’s water cycle (how clouds form; how rain falls, is collected and distributed).
The Epping Views team will be joined by 450 other “water warriors” from schools across Victoria. At Etihad Stadium, each team will present a workshop about urban water, followed by interactive workshops at Collingwood Children’s Farm.
Kids Teaching Kids organises a range of environmental education events for school students.
Melbourne Water spokesman Nicolas McGay said it was vital to educate students about the state’s water. “It’s important to teach kids about our drinking and environmental water and what we do on the land and with the drainage systems. If we can get 450 kids learning about it and teaching their family and community about the issues, it benefits us greatly.”
Mr McGay said Victorians’ water usage had remained lower than what it was before the ‘millennium drought’ in the first decade after 2000.
