Police neighbourhood patrols were sent into overdrive when they targeted known car crime hotspots, such as shopping centres, car parks and railway stations during Whittlesea’s Operation Roadside 2.
The operation, earlier this month, came together after the release of new police data revealed that theft from vehicles increased 40 per cent in the year to mid-March, while theft of vehicles over the same 12 months rose 20 per cent.
Superintendent Sharon Cowden said police would continue to focus their work on reducing such crimes.
“The community can expect to see a highly-visible police presence as our members saturate areas where we’re seeing high numbers of these crimes occurring,” Superintendent Cowden said.
Many of the crimes were opportunistic, she said, and could be prevented if vehicle owners committed to a few simple steps.
Whittlesea area commander Inspector Robert Dykstra said too many drivers were still leaving their cars unlocked, unsecured or leaving valuable items in clear view.
He warned “tradies”, particularly, to take extra precautions.
“Tradies, your vehicles and trailers are often targeted so the safest place to park is off the street or against objects to prevent access doors being opened,” Inspector Dykstra said. “Your tools are your livelihood, so protect them.”
