Council invests in greener turfs

Hume council is continuing to invest in improving the surfaces of green spaces across the municipality.

At the 8 December council meeting, a series of motions were passed to improve the quality of turfs and sporting grounds.

Councillor Daniel English said the improvements include line marking, synthetic grass services, irrigation and chemical applications.

“Everyone from outside of Hume that’s come to play on our grounds has always commented on how good [they] are,” Cr English said.

“This is an investment for the future.”

Hume council is responsible for maintaining 81 active sports fields spanning over 110 hectares.

Councillor Jarrod Bell said these irrigation systems and turf management contracts are crucial.

“The standard of our fields, ovals and soccer pitches… is dependent on us being able to use good quality irrigation systems,” Cr Bell said.

“[Otherwise they] are just barren paddocks, which are actually dangerous to our players.”

Cr Bell said this series of contracts represents good value to ratepayers and the broader Hume community.
