Kids lead Banksia Gardens renewal

Residents of the Banksia Gardens Public Housing Estate have proven the strength and creativity of their community after working to transform their local playgrounds through a grassroots restoration project.

The ‘Play it Forward’ initiative, led by residents with support from Banksia Gardens Community Services, has breathed new life into the formerly neglected playground located on Fir Close.

Over 400 residents, including many families with young children call the estate home, but its three playgrounds have long gone without proper maintenance or care.

Determined to change things, residents banded together to clean-up the space, removing broken glass and syringes, planting greenery, repairing and repainting equipment, and starting a colourful mural which continues to grow with more and more community members jumping on board.

On Thursday, October 2, 18 local children joined artists Emma Russell, Cheylee Fiddler, and Tiff Young for a creative workshop, adding their own touches through painting, weaving, and gardening.

Project coordinator Melodie Radatti said the initiative is about more than just play.

“This school holidays workshop puts children at the heart of the playground, giving them a chance to take ownership and shape a space that’s fun, safe and all their own,” she said.

“By using their creativity and imagination, they’re learning teamwork, problem-solving, confidence and self-expression while leaving a personal mark on their community.”

Ms Radatti said securing ongoing funding is vital to fully restore and maintain all three playgrounds.
