Exercise for stroke prevention

The Stroke Foundation’s biggest annual fundraising event, Stride4Stroke, kicks off this September and westies are invited to join in.

Previously held in November, this year’s month-long challenge is starting earlier to give people a springtime boost to their health and fundraising goals.

All September, participants will set a personal moving minutes goal, the time they spend being active and complete it in whatever way works for them.

Walking, running, dancing, swimming, riding, yoga, or any exercise that best suits their ability or interest works fine.

Stroke Foundation chief executive Dr Lisa Murphy said Stride4Stroke is a simple, fun way to make a real difference. “

You can stride anywhere, anytime, and in any way that gets you moving. Every minute of exercise reduces your risk of experiencing a stroke and every dollar raised goes towards vital stroke prevention, research, recovery programs and advocacy,” she said.

Last year, 1754 Stride4Stroke participants joined forces to raise more than $400,000, and the group would love to see even more people get involved this September.

Strokes remain one of Australia’s biggest health challenges – with about 46,000 stroke events impacting Australians of all ages in 2023 – that is one every 11 minutes.

Research shows that 80 per cent of strokes can be prevented by getting regular health check-ups, managing blood pressure, cholesterol, being active, avoiding smoking and excess alcohol consumption.

Just 30 minutes of exercise five times a week can reduce the risk of stroke by 25 percent.
