A small section of road in Mernda will be discontinued to correct title alignments and pave the way for future upgrades to Regent Street.
At its August 19 meeting, Whittlesea council resolved to discontinue a 264 square metre section of Regent Street, adjacent to 70w Regent Street and 2w Brickwell Lane.
Council officers said the discontinuance would ensure consistent boundaries along Regent Street, which is earmarked for widening as part of the Mernda Strategy Plan.
The broader project will allow for shared paths, nature strips, bus bays and parking lanes, supporting the suburb’s growing transport needs.
“The section of road is no longer reasonably required for public use and its discontinuance will not impact pedestrian or vehicle movement in the area,” the report stated.
Cr Christine Stow said, “These things happen from time to time where we do need to make motions, bring it to council and make the amendment so that the public road is discontinued and put back into the land in a better use”.
The land affected is contained within three separate titles and adjoins parcels already owned by council.
A notice confirming the discontinuance will be published in the Victoria Government Gazette, and council’s public roads register will be updated accordingly.
