Coolaroo man charged

A Coolaroo man has been charged by police after stop sticks were used to stop an allegedly stolen truck.

The Hino truck was allegedly stolen in a commercial burglary at Somerton on Saturday, July 19.

Investigating police tracked the vehicle to Mahoney’s Road in Campbellfield about 8.50pm on Sunday, July 20.

Officers covertly followed the truck as it was driven north along the Hume Freeway.

The Air Wing was called in and followed the vehicle from overhead as it moved north of Beverage.

Highway Patrol officers attempted to intercept the truck before it entered the township of Wallan.

Police said the driver refused to pull over and drove recklessly, crashing into a street pole before stop sticks were successfully deployed in Franklin Close about 9.20pm.

A woman was arrested at the scene while the male driver attempted to flee on foot but was arrested in a nearby backyard, according to police.

A 41-year-old Coolaroo man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, driving in a dangerous manner, failing to stop on police direction, disqualified driving and possessing equipment to break into a house.

He has been bailed to face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on August 21.

The woman, a 31-year-old from woman was released and is expected to be charged on summons.
