A vision to transform Edgars Creek into a thriving, green corridor that supports biodiversity, community connection and active lifestyles is now on the table, and Whittlesea council wants locals to help shape it.
Spanning 13 kilometres through Wollert, Epping, Lalor and Thomastown, Edgars Creek is a lesser-known but deeply valued tributary of the Merri Creek.
The city’s draft Edgars Creek Corridor Landscape Improvement Plan sets out a long-term blueprint for revitalising the area, with native planting, upgraded paths and new gathering places to bring people and nature closer together.
The plan breaks the corridor into six distinct precincts, each with tailored actions designed to improve open space and access. Key features include increased native vegetation to support biodiversity, safer shared paths for walkers and cyclists, and infrastructure upgrades to encourage recreational use.
Mayor Martin Taylor said the creek holds a special place in the hearts of locals.
“The Edgars Creek corridor is a special feature of our municipality and loved by our community,” Cr Taylor said.
“This draft plan provides a clear vision for how we can enhance its health and natural beauty.”
Cr Taylor added the plan is about more than aesthetics, it’s about restoring and protecting local ecosystems while ensuring the creek can be enjoyed by future generations.
“Our plan will help restore and protect the creek, create safer access for everyone and improve our local environment,” he said.
The initiative also builds on the existing Thomastown and Lalor Place Framework, aiming to better connect public spaces across suburbs and offer locals more opportunities to engage with their surroundings.
The draft is now on public exhibition until July 18.
Residents are encouraged to provide feedback through a short survey on the council’s Engage Whittlesea platform.
A series of in-person pop-up sessions will also be held across the corridor area between June 20 and July 18, giving the community a chance to ask questions and share ideas directly with council staff.
Session dates and more information are available at engage.whittlesea.gov.au/edgarscreek-lip.
