Melbourne to open F1 season

Melbourne will once again kick off the Formula 1 (F1) season next year, with the Australian Grand Prix locked in as the first race on the 2026 calendar.

Next year’s F1 schedule was officially released on Tuesday, June 10, with the Albert Park circuit confirmed to host the season opener from Thursday, March 5 to Sunday, March 8, 2026.

With last year’s race attracting a record 465,000 fans across the four days, the 2026 event could yet be even bigger if Melbourne’s Oscar Piastri continues his current form and returns home as reigning world champion.

The McLaren driver is currently leading the 2025 F1 driver standings after 9 rounds, and is aiming to become the first Australian to win the title since Alan Jones in 1980.

Regardless of whether Piastri triumphs or not, Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos said Melbourne was the natural home of the F1 season opener.

“Kicking off the 2026 season right here in Victoria is a huge win – keeping our city front and centre on the global stage,” Mr Dimopoulos said.

“The Grand Prix doesn’t just bring the buzz – it brings real economic benefits, with thousands of visitors filling local hotels, venues and attractions across the city and beyond.”

Australian Grand Prix Corporation chief executive Travis Auld next year’s race was eagerly anticipated.

“There is something special about being the first race of the season, and we’re looking forward to sharing that with hundreds of thousands of fans once again in 2026.”

Mr Auld said ticketing information would be released in the coming weeks.
