Police operation targets hoons

Police have successfully shut down planned hoon meets across Melbourne’s northern suburbs, with a targeted weekend operation resulting in dozens of offences detected and vehicles impounded.

The proactive blitz focused on known hoon hot-spots, including the Roxburgh Park Shopping Centre precinct, Merrifield Industrial Estate in Mickleham, as well as areas of Epping and Campbellfield, on Saturday, May 31.

As a result of the operation, three drivers are expected to be charged with unlicensed or disqualified driving.

Police also handed out 30 infringement notices for various traffic offences, including speeding and driving unregistered vehicles.

Two vehicles were impounded, and five drivers were issued with defect notices for issues such as mechanical faults, engine modifications, window tinting and tyre wear.

Defect notices require the owner to repair or replace faulty parts and obtain a roadworthy certificate from Vic Roads within four weeks–or risk having their vehicle’s registration suspended.

Senior Sergeant Frank Cuce said the crackdown sent a clear message to reckless drivers

“We have zero tolerance for those who blatantly choose to disregard road rules. This kind of behaviour puts the driver at risk of collision, but everyone else on the road and surrounding. The minute you cross the line and engage in dangerous hoon activity, you won’t be able to hide from the police. We will continue to run targeted operations and proactively patrol the roads and known hot spots to detect and deter dangerous driving.”
