In the crisp Autumn air of Kilmore, a quiet reverence fell over Dianella Hostel as residents, staff, and community members gathered to pay tribute to those who served.
For the first time, Kilmore District Hospital became the heart of Northern Health’s annual Anzac service– a moving ceremony steeped in history, pride and gratitude.
For more than a decade, Northern Health’s Anzac service has been a tradition rooted in reflection, held at Bundoora Centre.
But 2024 marked a symbolic new chapter.
Following the voluntary amalgamation of Northern Health and Kilmore District Hospital in November last year, this year’s ceremony was proudly hosted in Kilmore for the first time.
The service was led by Master of Ceremonies Jennifer Gilham, Divisional Director Community Hospitals, alongside Bec Van de Paverd, Divisional Director Medicine and Cancer Services.
In a poignant welcome, Ms Gilham reminded attendees of Anzac Day’s enduring significance.
“On April 25 1915, Gallipoli was the site of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War,” Ms Gilham said.
“Today, we honour the 60,000 Australians who died and the 156,000 wounded or taken prisoner in that war.”
Ms Gilham also acknowledged the often- overlooked sacrifices of over 800 Aboriginal Australians who served at Gallopoli, and the more than 3,000 Australian villain nurses who volunteered during World War I.
Northern Health Chief Executive Debra Bourne delivered the Anzac address, reflecting on the heroism of wartime nurses and the growing partnership between Kilmore District Hospital and Northern Health.
“Their bravery left an indelible mark on the broader medical field,” Ms Bourne said.
“Many were honoured for their heroism, while others paid the ultimate price.
Yet, their selflessness remains too often overshadowed.”
The event brought together a wide cross-section of the community, including MP Cindy Mcleish, members of Ambulance Victoria, RSL representatives, and local musical groups.
The Northern Health Community Choir, Whittlesea Township Choir and the Ukulele Kilmore Group performed heartfelt renditions, adding a soulful soundtrack to the morning’s remembrance.
