Northern Hospital shines in global research spotlight

If saving lives wasn’t impressive enough, the team at Northern Hospital Epping is now turning heads on the world stage – not with stethoscopes, but with spreadsheets.

Northern has been recognised by the international AlliGatOr Project (Acute appendicitis: a Global cohort study to Audit Outcomes and improve Results) as one of the top five per cent of data contributors globally.

The hospital has entered nearly 1,000 patients into this groundbreaking emergency care study, which is helping shape the future of global healthcare – one appendicitis case at a time.

The AlliGatOr Project is an ambitious international initiative using appendicitis as a lens to examine and enhance emergency care systems.

By gathering data on patients undergoing appendectomy across various countries, the study seeks to understand differences in presentation, diagnosis, and treatment and ultimately raise the standard of care worldwide.

At Northern Health, the project has sparked passionate involvement from clinicians keen to make an impact beyond the hospital walls.

“Being part of a global study that evaluates such a common surgical condition is an exciting opportunity,” Dr Nasser Saket said.

The AlliGatOr management team has offered to spotlight Northern Health’s contributors across its social media platforms– a digital pat on the back to acknowledge the hospital’s role in driving real-world health outcomes.

“Participating in this global effort fills me with pride,” said Dr Frank Luo.

“It’s a reflection of how we do things here – with purpose, precision and heart.”
