Tributes have started flowing for Sunbury stalwart and former Hume mayor Jack Ogilvie who died yesterday.
The Sunbury resident died after a battle with oesophageal and stomach cancer.
Jack was a former Hume councillor and was mayor from 1999–2000, and then again from 2008–09.
He was first elected to the former Shire of Bulla in 1990, before the formation of Hume council.
He served the Sunbury community for 26 years across the two councils.
He was also the former president of the Sunbury Netball Football Club and an active greyhound racing enthusiast, working as the managing director of Greyhound Performance Products.
A tribute posted to Greyhound Performance Products confirmed his death.
“Sadly we need to tell you Jack Ogilvie passed away at 3pm on Tuesday 5th November. He had a hard battle with oesophageal and stomach cancer and fought to the end,” the tribute stated.
Jack’s friend Adam Mizzi posted a tribute to “King Jack”.
“Rest in Peace Jack Ogilvie. He was a mate and friend to so many. He served our community for more than 27 years and loved our Sunbury community. Our deepest condolences go out to the Ogilvie family. We love you King Jack, fly high mate,” the post said.
Mr Mizzi was part of a committee of local businesses that threw their support behind a black-tie ball in July 2015 to raise money to support Jack in his recovery from a stroke, which had left him paralysed on his left side.
Jack returned to council in October 2015, before retiring at the October 2016 election.
In a social media post, the Sunbury Cricket Club said Jack had a strong connection to Sunbury and its local sporting clubs.
“Sunbury Cricket Club is saddened to hear the news of Jack Ogilvie’s passing,” the post stated.
“For the last almost 30 years, Jack worked within our community as a local councillor and staunch supporter of all things Sunbury. That included his passion for the Sunbury Cricket Club and football club.
“He was largely instrumental in achieving our upstairs clubrooms as he recognised that we didn’t have a home. Upon opening of the rooms Jack was invited and spoke to our 1st XI and we presented him with a plaque as SCC #1 Ticket holder in appreciation. Jack was also present at our 150th anniversary celebration and often ventured down to Clarke Oval.
“Jack will be greatly missed within our community and we pass on our condolences to his family and friends.”
Jack is survived by his wife Lesley and two daughters and their families.
