Greenvale Kangaroos hoping to find some more consistency in the Victorian Premier Cricket women’s seconds competition.
After playing finals for the first time last season, the Kangaroos are keen to further improve and earn a spot in the top grade.
Captain-coach Catherine Morrow said it had been a bit of a slow start to the season.
“It’s been a bit up and down,” she said. “We have the talent and everything but the form has been up and down.
“We need to be consistent every week and play up near our best all the way through.”
Morrow said with a young side there is going to be some inconsistency, but most of the squad had been playing at this level for a couple of years now so they know what to expect.
She said they had promoted some players from in their ranks, who had earned their opportunity in the top grade.
The majority of the squad is teenagers this season.
‘The second oldest player has just turned 18,” she said. “The youngest is 14.
“It’s about being switched on for the whole time and learning to switch between T20s and one-dayers.”
Morrow said the absence of Chedean Nation hadn’t helped them. She said they weren’t sure when she would arrive.having been part of the West Indies World Cup squad.
“She makes a huge difference to our side,” she said. “The way she goes about things and what you need to do outside of the game to get better.
“We’re looking forward to seeing her.”
Many of the playing group is also juggling school exams early in the season.
After starting the season 2-4, Morrow said the group was working hard to try and turn it around and return to finals.
“It’s working on what we need to work on and keep improving,” she said. “It’s what we take away from our training sessions and doing a little bit extra.
“We’ve already seen the improvement and consistency in some of the players, the players that are doing the extra work.”
Morrow said across the women’s program it had been going really well with the club having four sides.
She said numbers had been fantastic and that many of them were wanting to get to the next level.
Meanwhile, young Kangaroos star Noura Abdul Qader has been named in her second state team in a number of months.
She’s been named in the under-16 and under-19 Vic Metro teams for the national championships.
Morrow said the 14-year-old was really talented.
