A Craigieburn man who tossed a burning cigarette from a Honda sedan on Sydney Road, Campbellfield, has avoided a conviction but has been fined.
Environment Protection Authority Victoria issued the man a littering fine after a witness reported him to the 24-hour pollution hotline on May 19, 2023.
The case went to the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court, where the magistrate fined the man $730 and ordered him to pay $380 in costs.
The EPA says cigarette butts are the most common form of litter and they often find their way through drains and waterways to the bay and lit cigarettes can cause fires if they land among grass or bush.
Members of the public can report pollution to 1300 372 842 or epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution/reporting-pollution.
