Craigieburn make it two in a row

It took Craigieburn City seven rounds to get one win on the board, but it only took one more round to double it in the FV state league 2 north-west.

Playing at this level for the first time it took some time for Craigieburn to settle in.

There were plenty of celebrations when it beat the Geelong Rangers 4-2 before being able to back it up on Friday night beating Altona East Phoenix, 2-0.

Craigieburn coach Michael Loche said things were starting to turn for them.

“Two in two weeks,” he said. “It was good to get the win last week and then back it up after that.

“We bought in some players as we needed to bring some quality into the team. We’ve worked hard over the pre-season and start of the year and we’re now getting some results going our way and getting some wins on the board.”

On Friday night, Craigieburn led 1-0 at half time and was able to double the advantage in the second half.

Jordan Connerton and Munashe Chagumaira were the goal scorers.

“Altona East is a really good side and we had to defend well,” Loche said. “They will be a contender at the end of the year.”

Loche said they would continue to get better as the season goes on.

“It’s a big thing playing in state league 2,” he said. “It will take some time to adjust to the standard of what is required

“The players to their credit have been able to do that. They are enjoying going to trending and the approach hasn’t changed and it won’t change.

“We’re pretty level headed.”

Craigieburn now sits in 10th spot on seven points.

This week it faces Albion Rovers on Friday night.

In other state league 2 north-west results, Whittlesea Ranges beat Albion Rovers, 4-2, Uni Hill Eagles lost to Keilor Park, 1-0, Lalor United beat Hoppers Crossing, 3-0, Hume United beat Geelong Rangers, 2-1 and Mill Park was too good for Westvale Olympic, winning 4-0.
