The Craigieburn Eagles were made to pay for a slow second half in their Big V women’s division 1-2 clash with the RMIT Redbacks on Saturday night.
Without captain Myra Wood, the Eagles headed to Bundoora hoping to get back on the winners list after splitting their two opening round matches.
The Eagles had the better of it in the first quarter in a low scoring affair, with just 16 points scored between the two teams.
The Redbacks started to key into the gear in the second quarter and led by one point at the main break.
The Eagles struggled to score in the third quarter and the deficit was increased to five points at the last break.
The game opened up in the last quarter with the Redbacks winning 62-51.
Emily Ellis top scored for the Eagles with 12 points, while Jasmine Solano scored 11 points off the bench.
The Eagles men got home in a thriller in the division 2 competition against the Collingwood All Stars.
The Eagles started well on their home court and led by seven points at the first break. The margin was reduced to just one at half time.
The sides went goal for goal in the third quarter, with scores level heading into the final quarter.
The two sides traded the lead early in the last quarter, with the Eagles in front as the game entered its final five minutes.
The Eagles were able to stay in front in the dying minutes. Both teams missed free throws in the run home, but the Eagles did enough to win 88-87.
Mark Berezdecky top scored with 27 points.
There is no Big V this weekend due to Easter.
