Life Saving Victoria (LSV) has issued a grave warning to Victorians, including those in Hume and Whittlesea, to stay safe around water after four fatal drownings ahead of this long weekend.
Lifesavers responded to an incident at Phillip Island on Wednesday, January 24, after reports that four people in the water needed assistance at Newhaven.
Tragically, all four people lost their lives, taking the summer drowning toll to 19 people.
While temperatures are not expected to be high, LSV general manager lifesaving services Liam Krige said it’s important not to be complacent when recreating in, on and around water.
“Yesterday was another tragic reminder that anyone can drown,” he said.
“As we approach a long weekend, we want to remind the community the importance of being aware of the conditions and swimming between the flags to avoid a tragic outcome.
“On a public holiday you have double the likelihood of drowning so make choices to safeguard yourself and your loved ones.
“Opt for patrolled locations and swim between the flags. With 65-plus patrolled locations across the state, including patrolled waterways, the red and yellow flags will not be far away.”
Mr Krige said residents should assess the conditions before entering the water, actively supervise children, wear life jackets when boating or fishing and postpone alcohol consumption until after water-related activities.
“By making informed choices, we can collectively contribute to a safer and more enjoyable public holiday for all,” he said.
