Donations needed for flood victims

Not-for-profit donation platform, GIVIT, is calling on Victorians, including those in Hume and Whittlesea, to donate to the Ready to Learn Appeal to assist those in need of education support.

Natural disasters and the rising cost of living have impacted thousands of people across the state leaving many families in need of assistance to prepare for the school year.

GIVIT Victoria manager Natarsha Baker said that there are more than 700 essential education items requested across Victoria on the GIVIT platform.

“GIVIT is calling for donations of educational materials for students and families in urgent need of support,” she said.

“This includes traditional back to school items for primary and high school but also requests for TAFE and university students.”

Hundreds of families have been seriously impacted by floods in parts of the state over the past 18 months, with many losing all of their belongings and living in temporary accommodation.

“The cost of living has exacerbated these challenges for many people meaning they are not able to purchase school uniforms or stationary supplies ahead of the school year,” Ms Baker said.

The most requested items include stationery, school bags, lunch boxes, drink bottles and laptops. School shoes, school uniforms, and vouchers to purchase these items are also often requested.

One hundred per cent of donated money received by GIVIT is used to purchase essential items and services.
