Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) is taking strides to bridge the gap between education and the booming civil construction industry.
A recent visit to Aitken College by the Mickleham Road upgrade – stage 1 project team offered students a first hand look at the exciting opportunities available in this rapidly expanding sector.
The ‘Careers in Civil Construction’ program, spearheaded by MRPV, aims to expose secondary school students to a wide range of careers within the civil construction industry
More than 400 students from Aitken College, spanning years 10 to 12, were given insights into the diverse opportunities available, including operating heavy machinery, engineering, and environmental management.
For many, this experience will inform their subject and course selections, shaping their future career journeys.
Greenvale MP Iwan Walters highlighted the importance of such initiatives.
“As demand for construction workers continues to soar, our local industry is rapidly expanding, and this initiative is one of the ways we are working to show students the possibilities of entering the civil construction workforce,” he said.
MRPV program director Adrian Furner expressed enthusiasm for the program’s expansion.
“It’s fantastic to see our well-established ‘Careers in Civil Construction’ program come out to Aitken College – it’s a great chance for students from across Greenvale and beyond to explore opportunities in a booming local industry,” he said.
The Mickleham Road upgrade involves adding extra lanes on Mickleham Road, installing new traffic lights, and upgrading intersections, The project aims to reduce congestion and enhance safety for commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists along Mickleham Road.
Scheduled for completion in mid-2025.
