Craigieburn Road will be closed to all traffic in both directions between Hanson and Bridgewater roads from Friday, June 23 to Saturday, August.19.

In an attempt to fast track the widening of Craigieburn Road, detours will be in place, encouraging motorists to use Hanson Road, Medway Road and Cimberwood Drive to avoid the closure.

Motorists should allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time if they travel around this stretch of Craigieburn Road using designated detour routes.

“We encourage motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time as we get on with building the new lanes,” Major Road Projects program director Dipal Sorathia said.

“These works will be disruptive but are absolutely necessary to build the much-needed new lanes this key arterial needs, as safely and quickly as possible.”

Some changes to local bus routes and timetables will also be necessary to carry out these works.

This section will reopen to two lanes in each direction in late August, and extra lanes will continue to be built behind barriers.

The section of Craigieburn Road between the Craigieburn Plaza precinct to Bridgewater Road is a major peak hour bottleneck for people travelling to the Hume Highway or towards Mickleham Road.

Limited lane capacity at and between the signalised intersections at Bridgewater Road and Hanson Road, means delays and frustration for the 28,000 vehicles that travel through this part of Craigieburn Road every day.

Adding new lanes in either direction on Craigieburn Road will ease the bottleneck for traffic entering and exiting the Craigieburn Plaza and surrounding sporting venues.

The Craigieburn Road upgrade project is projected to be completed in 2025.
