Plea for cash to match growth

The beautification of Pascoe Vale Road and more car parking at Craigieburn railway station are on the wishlist of Hume council’s top 10 priorities for investment.

Hume mayor Casey Nunn wants state and federal funding to match the area’s rapid expansion.

She said the council’s investment priorities, developed through Hume Horizons 2040 and the Hume City Council Plan 2013-17, should be a timely reminder for political parties of all persuasions in the lead-up to next month’s state election.

“Our community is experiencing rapid growth and for this to be sustainable we need the state and federal governments to continue to invest in key projects for our city,” Cr Nunn said.

She cited funding priorities as duplication of Somerton, Craigieburn and Sunbury roads; grade separation of Camp Road railway crossing at Campbellfield; the Bulla bypass; traffic lights at the Gap Road-Home Street intersection; Broadmeadows railway station redevelopment; and extra car parking at Sunbury station.

“If you drive down the Pascoe Vale Road precinct, it’s awful to look at,” Cr Nunn said.

She wants more and better screening to hide the train tracks from view and reduce noise for nearby residents.

Cr Nunn said about 600 more car parks were needed at Craigieburn station, among other upgrades. However, the lifelong Craigieburn resident said the crown in the jewel would be redevelopment of Broadmeadows station.

“I hope some election commitments will be forthcoming,” she said. “It shouldn’t matter what margin there is in the seat.”
