Magpies get the win, Jets lose a thriller

Roxburgh Park opened its account with a win against Moonee Valley in the Essendon District Football League division 1 on Saturday.

The Magpies started the match on fire with seven first quarter goals, before the Fog reduced the margin to six points at half time.

The margin blew back out to 31 points at the last break and even last quarter sealed the 16.12 (108)-12.5 (77).

Ryan Micallef kicked three goals for the Magpies in the win. Thomas Baker was named their best.

It was a tougher weekend for Craigieburn, Tullamarine and Westmeadows which all suffered losses.

The Eagles, who had a first up win against Roxburgh Park, trailed all day against Keilor Park.

While the teams had the same amount of scoring shots, the Devils got the win, 7.9 (51)-5.11 (41).

Jake Carlisle kicked two goals for the Eagles and was named their best.

Westmeadows got the first look at Deer Park, which has joined the competition this year.

The Tigers led at quarter time, before the Lions started to kick into gear.

While the Lions had plenty of scoring opportunities, the Tigers were restricted to just three goals after quarter time.

The Lions got the win, 17.17 (119)-6.8 (44).

Ethan Councillor and Shaun Knott kicked two goals each for the Tigers, with Finbar Delbridge was named their best.

West Coburg again got the better of Tullamarine in a rematch of last season’s preliminary final.

A 47-0 first quarter set up the Burgers, who were able to lead throughout, winning 15.17 (107)-8.3 (51).

Phillip Smith was named the Demons best.

In premier division, Greenvale lost a thriller to East Keilor.

The Cougars led throughout the match, but the Jets came late.

They kicked three goals in the final quarter, to bring the margin back to within a goal.

They couldn’t get closer, with the Cougars losing 7.14 (56)-7.10 (52).

Daniel Trifunovic and Trent Warren were named the Jets best.
