Hume council’s conservation team will be conducting a series of planned burns to manage vegetation within conservation reserves across the city.
Planned burns help to control weeds, germinate indigenous seed, and reduce fuel loads to prevent bushfires from occurring.
Burns will take place at reserves across Broadmeadows, Bulla, Craigieburn, Kalkallo, Mickleham and Sunbury.
As the burns can only be completed under certain weather conditions, the exact time and day of burns cannot be provided for in advance, however all nearby residents will be notified of planned burns in their area.
Houses that immediately surround the reserve where the burn will occur, will be notified via a letter, which contains general information about the burn location and indicates the month or months when the burn may occur.
VicFire are notified of each burn and the conservation team will carefully monitor weather conditions, dryness of the vegetation and site geography before, during and after each burn-off.
Traffic will be managed where smoke may affect local roads. Residents driving near a controlled burn should turn on their headlights and take extra care due to poor road visibility.
