Fight breaks out at cricket grand final

Police and paramedics responded to a brawl at a grand final cricket match between Camrea Stingrays and Lalor Warriors cricket clubs on Saturday, March 18.

Police arrived at H L T Oulton Reserve in Preston about 5pm to find that the parties involved had separated.

Live streamed footage, viewed by Star Weekly, shows a skirmish breaking out between players, with one player swinging his bat at a rival player.

As the violence broke out, spectators rushed to the field to join.

Police said a man sustained minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

A formal complaint was not made to police, but the incident is being investigated by the North Metro Cricket Association.

A spokesperson for the North Metro Cricket Association (NMCA) said that they are unable to confirm any details at this time, but provided an official statement.

“The North Metro Cricket Association condemns the behaviour and actions taken by the players and people involved in the incident. Violence of any kind is not tolerated in our association,” the spokesperson said.

“Our investigations are ongoing. We are working to offer appropriate support to those affected including officials and volunteers who were present at the time of the incident.”

The NMCA hosted the Jack Quick Shield grand final with Camrea defeating the Lalor Warriors to take home the cup.

Both of the cricket clubs involved were contacted for comment.
