Nominate a community hero in Whittlesea

Time is running out to nominate a local hero in Whittlesea.

Council is calling on the community to make their nominations for the 2022 Community Awards by January 31.

A council spokesperson said the awards are an opportunity for locals to show their appreciation to the people who make a difference in the area.

“Nominations have been open for more than a month now, and we are seeing some inspiring responses from the community across the five categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Access and Inclusion Citizen of the Year and Sustainable, and Environment Citizen or Group of the Year,” the spokesperson said.

“We are particularly encouraging the community to nominate more local heroes in two of our newer categories – the Access and Inclusion Citizen of the Year and the Sustainable Environment Citizen or Group of the Year.

The spokesperson said these two categories haven’t been around for long, but both highlight the efforts of unsung heroes in two very important areas for our community.

“The Access and Inclusion Citizen of the Year award will be presented to an individual who has gone above and beyond to improve participation opportunities for people who might be restricted due to physical, social or other challenges,” the spokesperson said.

“This might be a carer, a support worker or just a member of the community who improves the life of an individual living with a disability or experiencing a difficult situation.

“The Sustainable Environment Citizen or Group of the Year will be awarded to an individual or group that has actively responded to environmental issues impacting the City of Whittlesea.

“This award helps promote and celebrate individual and group contribution to this cause.”

Nominations for the awards close on Tuesday January, 31 with presentation of the awards to follow in March at the Whittlesea Community Festival.

Nominations can be made online or in person at the Civic Centre in South Morang at the Customer Service desk. Details: www.whittlesea.vic.gov.au/communityawards.
